©Gill Billington. All rights reserved. Two Spitfires, from world war two are flying in blue sky above the clouds. These British warplanes were fighters used during the D-Day landings when allied troops invaded the beaches of Normandy on the 6th June 1944.
On D-Day, the allied forces consisted mainly of US, Canadian and British troops but others included Australian, French, Belgian, New Zealand, Czech, Dutch, Greek, Norweigian, Rhodesian and Polish naval, ground and air support.
This was the initial stage of Operation Overlord which aimed to liberate Europe from the Nazis and bring an end to WW2, however, on D-Day, the fighting was so intense there were at least 10,000 casualties and 4,414 died. May we never forget the bravery of those young men who fought and died for our freedom.
