©Gill Billington. All rights reserved. Like a pot of gold gleaming in the woods this magnificent fungus was glowing in a shaft of light from the stormy sky. Growing on the side of a fallen tree, what golden beauty I saw in the decay of the textured brown bark with the patterns and scalloped edges of the big fungi in close up giving it a surreal look and the stormy landscape in the distance. This is nature at it's finest, taking you by surprise just when you didn't expect it. With the help of Stefan Buczacki, an author and gardening and natural history expert, I have found out it is called Polyporus squamosus which is a basidiomycete bracket fungus commonly called Dryad's saddle or Pheasant's back mushroom.
